Conflict Management Essay Example for Free
Conflict Management Essay Conflict management refers to the long-term management of intractable conflicts. It is the label for the variety of ways by which people handle grievances ââ¬â standing up for what they consider to be right and against what they consider to be wrong. Those ways include such diverse phenomena as gossip, ridicule, lynching, terrorism, warfare, feuding, genocide, law, mediation, and avoidance. Which forms of conflict management will be used in any given situation can be somewhat predicted and explained by the social structure ââ¬â or social geometry ââ¬â of the case. Conflict management is often considered to be distinct from conflict resolution. In order for actual conflict to occurr, there should be an expression of exclusive patterns, and tell why the conflict was expressed the way it was. Conflict is not just about simple inaptness, but is often connected to a previous issue. The latter refers to resolving the dispute to the approval of one or both parties, whereas the former concerns an ongoing process that may never have a resolution. Neither is it considered the same as conflict transformation, which seeks to reframe the positions of the conflict parties. Scientific studies Scientific study of conflict management (also known as social control) owes its foundations to Donald Black, who typologized its elementary forms and used his strategy of pure sociology to explain several aspects of its variation. Research and theory on conflict management has been further developed by Allan Horwitz, Calvin Morill, James Tucker, Mark Cooney, M.P. Baumgartner, Roberta Senechal de la Roche, Marian Borg, Ellis Godard, Scott Phillips, and Bradley Campbell. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach and avoiding semantic discussions, we could also state that the father of conflict management is Thomas C. Schelling, an American economist and Nobel Prize winner, who authored the Strategy of Conflict in 1960. Schellingââ¬â¢s main goal was to lay the foundation for a theory of conflict that would include the fields of economics, psychology, sociology and the law. Conflict is an omnipresent trait of human societies since it is almost impossible to find two parties with entirely overlapping interests, thus a general theory for bargaining and negotiation to address conflict is useful not only in the field of international politics or business management, but also at the personal and intimate level. Counseling When personal conflict leads to frustration and loss of efficiency, counseling may prove to be a helpful antidote. Although few organizations can afford the luxury of having professional counselors on the staff, given some training, managers may be able to perform this function. Nondirective counseling, or listening with understanding, is little more than being a good listener ââ¬â something every manager should be. [1] Sometimes the simple process of being able to vent ones feelings ââ¬â that is, to express them to a concerned and understanding listener, is enough to relieve frustration and make it possible for the frustrated individual to advance to a problem-solving frame of mind, better able to cope with a personal difficulty that is affecting his work adversely. The nondirective approach is one effective way for managers to deal with frustrated subordinates and co-workers.[2] There are other more direct and more diagnostic ways that might be used in appropriate circumstances. The great strength of the nondirective approach (nondirective counseling is based on the client-centered therapy of Carl Rogers), however, lies in its simplicity, its effectiveness, and the fact that it deliberately avoids the manager-counselors diagnosing and interpreting emotional problems, which would call for special psychological training. No one has ever been harmed by being listened to sympathetically and understandingly. On the contrary, this approach has helped many people to cope with problems that were interfering with their effectiveness on the job.[2] References 1. ^ Henry P Knowles; Bà ¶rje O Saxberg (1971). Various ways a student can pay for his education Essay Example for Free
Various ways a student can pay for his education Essay Pursuing education may be expensive, but the cost incurred during oneââ¬â¢s education may be offset by the rewards resulting from education, which are usually long-term. Various factors determine the amount spent in education, especially college education. For instance, the level of education, type of college, and the total number of courses an individual is taking. Though there are various programs, which for education, timely saving for our education remain to be a very good start. There are several ways and payment options a students may use in order to cater for their education expenses as well as other expenses that may be incurred in the course of his or her education. For instance, through the award process of financial aid, universities and the federal government offer financial assistance to the needy. Several ways which one can use to finance for his higher level education include the following; The plan of monthly payment which is interest-free and can help one to manage his or her expenses of education by allowing one to pay tuition over several months course rather than paying lump sum amount at one time. This makes it easy for a person to pay for the education finance since it can reduce the amount one want to borrow and thus saving your money. The enrollment fee is low and there are no charges to this plan of monthly payment. This is also an effective way of paying education finances since it has different ways of payments which include: the credit card, money order, check or e-check. Other way students can pay for their education is through tuition assistance provided by the employer. Many organizations and companies offer programs of tuition assistance to their employees so as to retain them and also develop their skills and knowledge. For students who are employees of federal government or who are service member of active-duty have a chance of being eligible for assistance of tuition. A student may request his supervisor, representative of human resource or the personnel in education office as to whether benefits of tuition may be available to him or her. If the tuition benefit is available, then the student should register and pay his education bill using the tuition assistance by employer. A student may also be catered for his or her education bill by a scholarship. Scholarships are usually awarded to needy students who achieve high academic excellence, especially in high schools. Scholarships are prized highly since they represent financial aid form, which does not need to be repaid back. Both university and state, and federal scholarships are being awarded through process of financial aid. Scholarships are more often awarded on basis of financial need and academic performance. Students can also be considered if they apply for scholarship programs of such as coveted legislative scholarships. Scholarships awards by universities and colleges are based on several criteria which include financial need, academic achievement, and enrollment in a certain academic area or degree program. Furthermore, universities offer other several other programs of special scholarships for the college graduates and also for the military personnel, dependents and spouses. Student can pay for his education bill by the federal loans. As is in the case of several students, one may be in need of additional financing so as to supplement his or her savings, scholarships awards or grants. Many packages of financial aid usually offer aid in form of the federal loans. The federal loans have advantage since they offer interest rates which are low and repayment plans are flexible. Students may also be paid for their education finances by scholarships which may be awarded by organizations or companies. Several companies offer scholarships for artists, academic, athletic achievers among others. Interested students may apply for such scholarships and may be awarded. They may search those scholarships through the online search engines. Students may also choose to apply for private loans as a supplement to the federal loans so as to cater for their education bills. A student may find loan programs or lenders who offer repayment terms and interest rates which are reasonable. Grants are another means which a student may use to finance his or her higher education. Grants are financial awards which do not need to be paid back. Grants usually vary and depend on need level and enrollment status of the student. There are grants which are designated for students who are undergraduates only and they include the grants of federal pell, federal educational opportunity supplemental grants, and the part-time Maryland grants. Students can also pay their education bills through the earnings they get from the job opportunities provided the program of federal work-study. Amount awarded tend to vary according to the students need of finance and also fund availability. The work study is paid biweekly and students are paid according to number of worked hours. In conclusion, students have several means of paying their education bills and thus no student should stop learning due to lack of finance to cater for his or her education finances. My Vision To Become The Office Manager
My Vision To Become The Office Manager My personal leadership goal to lead my life independently is I put my education first in order to achieve the job of my dreams. I aim to get my education stream ended until NZIM and I aim that in the next 3 months. A job should follow in a year or so and then I can support my family needs as my parents retire than. In life I want to be an easy going in the family and not a Hitler type leader I want a balance of rule and freedom in my surround for myself and for others who are around me. By the next 10 years I want to have my own business which I am comfortable to work as and manage my life well as well as love my work. Skills to Develop My manager is the role model for me and I would like to develop my skills like him, he is so kind and talks politely to all staff and also always use magic words like please with the works and he never get angry with the staff members if they do any mistake but he always try to solve in a silence manner. As well the respected leader whom I would like to emulate is my supervisors she always works as a team with all the staff and always tries to help each other. Some of the skills which I would like to develop are to handle the entire machine at work, have good communication with all staff, and be active at work so that everything is done on time at last is time management . Current leadership frame reference The abilities which I would like to develop to become a leader are to become an excellent speaker and built more confident, develop excellent communication skills and empathy for my followers. I would like to get involve in community work and always find a way to help needy people. Target leadership frame of reference. I am a process worker and my target is to become full time supervisor so that it will built more confident in me and I will be able to reach my desired goals in future, my aim is to learn more things about the restaurant duties and develop my leadership skills in it. Counsel and coach myself to be an effective leader The best way to learn about something is to know how you learn the best and no one is better than me who can know how I prefer learning and what motivates me to learn and make a difference. I want to counsel and coach myself first and gain the confidence needed to be an effective leader; because without confidence it is difficult to achieve goals and when we are confident we will keep trying and not give up. This is the first step before I go further developing a leadership role for myself in life and it should take 2 -3 months if I start now. This process should take long because I need to see the circumstances in life, see them every day and think about my role in it and how I can make a difference. Continuously I will compare my new thoughts with other leaders around to see if they also think like I have been thinking about my role and its importance and if it somewhat similar than would mean I am on right track. Discover new aspects, revolutionised and effective theories about leadership In this approach I want to learn the new ways of leadership in the world. The fact that technology, fashion and way of living for people change overtime, I need to keep up with what works the best today. I cannot guide myself to be a leader using the 50 year old policies and ways because it wont be as effective as it was 50 years ago. This process follows after counselling and coaching myself and should also take 3-4 months as this will involve learning and studying case studies and analysing it. In the end, I can also compare my thinking with the outcomes of the case study and see if I had made decisions instead, what would the outcome had been. If, due my decisions I feel like I would have worsen the case or would make bad choice than it would mean I have a long way more to go. Take the bitter test and lead in the worst circumstance The third step in order is to take the bitter test and this will act like a real life practical approach. Because we always make bad performance when we first time ever do something, this approach will teach me how I perform and where I should improve. But, most importantly this is a bitter test and I will try to lead myself in the worst case scenario like take the tuff case. The reason for taking the bitter test is because however I perform in it I will learn the most because there would be nothing worse than the situation I use to lead myself in. This symbolises the saying that you aim for the stars, you will at least fall on the moon; so even if I fail to lead perfectly in my bitter test, I will actually perform better in least difficult leading task I have and eventually overtime be capable to lead in my leadership roles. This process I think will take 1 2 years depending on what the task is as if it is career than the task will be a long way from now. I will setup a achievement list that has a due date and the activities and abilities with due dates and I should achieve them before the dates specified as this will be a long leadership approach. Consult an experienced leader and learn the gaps The best way to learn my mistakes is to get an individual who is much unbiased while giving me the facts about my abilities. Obviously, whatever decision I make will be based upon my thinking and morally what we think and do, is what we feel is right so it is not possible for me to decide if I am doing the right thing the right way. Getting help from an experienced leader to tell me unbiased gaps in my plan is a good way to fix my mistakes and seal the gaps which is sure to be created by an inexperienced learning leader. Gaps are sure case in every beginning for every leaders career and those gaps are otherwise sealed through experience but, for me to use an experienced leader in my plan, I will be able to minimise those gaps of inefficiency which I will create in the future. This approach should be my second last approach which should take 1 2 months and I will evaluate my progress by frequently visit my chosen leader and take advises and about my experience and he / she will decide how I perform. Be part of a group of leaders to share and learn new things The last and final steps to start the process of making something good out of my life is match and compare my talents with all others in the same field of becoming a good leader for themselves and others in their lives. Because no two leaders are always same into dealing over the same issue, this means we can learn each others way of getting the same result with different acts and perspectives. In this approach I aim to get insights, experiences and learn more techniques that will enhance my abilities further. The brain storm team will include at least 3 people and we will share our knowledge and ideas on how to successfully become good leaders of our life. This approach would be a maximum of 1 month process and I will evaluate the process by making notes and matching it against my choices and perspectives and see what new things I learn everyday from the other learners and once I see that I know other learners actions and we all think like each other as well than that would mean I have successfully completed this process.

Politics and Love in Shakespeares Antony and Cleopatra Essay -- Anton
Politics and Love in Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra Although the political struggles in Antony and Cleopatra are often treated as backdrops to the supposedly more engaging love affair between the two title characters, these struggles permeate the entire play, and give the love story its heightened sense of importance and tragedy. The relationship between Antony and Cleopatra would not have attained its renown and immortality had they not had been extremely powerful and public figures. The conflict between public duty and personal desire is the underlying theme of the play, and how the characters respond to this conflict is what imbues the play with suspense and interest. This conflict is most clearly seen in Antony who is caught between his role as a triumvir of Rome and his love for the Egyptian Queen. By allowing his all-consuming passion to overwhelm his sense of responsibility, he loses his half of the empire to Octavian. Octavian, on the other hand, consistently places the interests of the state before his own. Although he is cal culating, shrewd, and unscrupulous, all of his thoughts are devoted to the ruling of Rome; politics is his one interest, and power his only obsession. Cleopatra as ruler is often treated secondarily to Cleopatra as seductress and lover. While most of the obvious power struggle is between Antony and Octavian, one cannot ignore Cleopatra's involvement. Throughout the play, and particularly at the end, she demonstrates an acute political awareness as she does her utmost to secure what is best for Egypt. In a play with three powerful figures it is expected that political motivations be never far from the foreground or from the characters' minds. Antony's conflict is succinctly described at th... ...ads and embodies. Question of politics and duty are present throughout Antony and Cleopatra, and the love story cannot be considered independently of them. The private emotions of the characters are influenced by the public world that they inhabit, and their actions are not only the actions of individuals, but also of powerful leaders. Nam June Paik Video Innovations :: Essays Papers
Nam June Paik Video Innovations Nam June Paik was born in Seoul, Korea on July 20, 1932. He was the fifth and youngest child of a textile merchant. In 1947, at the age of 14, he studied piano and composition with two of Korea's foremost composers. The family moved to Tokyo, Japan in 1950 to avoid the havoc of the Korean War. Paik studied music, history, art history, and philosophy at the University of Tokyo from 1953 to 1956. He did his graduate dissertation on Schoenberg. In 1956, he moved to Germany to pursue his interest in avant-garde music. He studied music history under Thrasybulos Georgiades at the University of Munich and composition under Wolfgang Fortner at the Hochschule fÃ
±r Musik. He also attended classes under Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luigi Nono, David Tudor, and John Cage. Paik lived in Cologne for the next five years and then returned to Japan for a short time to conduct experiments with electromagnets and color TV sets. In 1964, Paik moved to New York and still resides there today. While he lived in Korea, Paik had become familiar with the work of Schoenberg. Paik was interested in Schoenberg above all others because of his radical compositions. They reflected the social atmosphere of Seoul at the time. In 1947, Paik had only one piece of Schoenbergââ¬â¢s work. It took Paik two years to convince a record shop owner to let him listen to what was probably the only Schoenberg record in Korea. Paik had only two compositions by which to judge his ââ¬Å"guru.â⬠Then one day in Japan, in 1951, Paik heard a third piece on NHK Radio. Another of Paikââ¬â¢s great influences was John Cage, whom he met in Germany. Meeting Cage, a student of Schoenberg, was a turning point in Paikââ¬â¢s life. Paikââ¬â¢s piece Zen for Film was definitely influenced by Cageââ¬â¢s 4ââ¬â¢ 33â⬠, the silent piece. Cage was devoted to sounds, but Paik was devoted to objects, yet Cageââ¬â¢s influence is evident in all of Paikââ¬â¢s work. Joseph Beuys, like Cage, played an important role in influencing the direction of Paikââ¬â¢s video work. Paikââ¬â¢s portraits of Beuys constitute a significant body of work.

The Use of Settings in Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë Essay -- Charlott
The Use of Settings in Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontà « In this essay, I will be examining three different locations used in Charlotte Brontà «Ã¢â¬â¢s novel ââ¬ËJane Eyreââ¬â¢ and discussing their uses towards the story. The three settings I am to consider are the red-room at Gateshead Hall, Lowood Institution where Jane attends school, and Janeââ¬â¢s first sight at Thornfield Hall; the house in which she becomes employed as a Governess. The first setting I am going to discuss is the red-room at Gateshead Hall. Gateshead is the house in which Jane lives as a child after both her parents die. Jane is sent there to live with her Uncle and his family. Her Uncle dies shortly after her arrival and so she is left with her wicked Aunt Reed and her three cousins. Jane is sent to the red-room as a punishment, following an incident where John throws a book at her and she retaliates as he continues to physically bully her. The room itself is described: ââ¬ËSquare chamber, very seldom slept inââ¬â¢ and this room happens to be ââ¬Ëone of the largest and stateliest chambers in the mansionââ¬â¢ The room is non-surprisingly dominated with the colour red. The furniture is made from deep polished mahogany, the walls were a ââ¬Ësoft fawn colour with a blush of pink in itââ¬â¢ and the curtains draped around the four-poster bed were red. We soon find out that this room was in fact the room where Uncle Reed had died. ââ¬ËIt was in this chamber he had breathed his last; here he lay in state; hence his coffin was borne by the undertakerââ¬â¢s men; and, since that day, a sense of dreary consecration had guarded it from frequent intrusionââ¬â¢ Jane becomes extremely frightened by the whole sinister atmosphere of the room, and worsens her state of mind with the thoughts ... ...tory would be entirely different. They keep the reader interested, not only in the story, but also in Jane. The reader grows to love Jane as a strong and brave character and I enjoyed seeing how she managed to cope with such difficult situations. I thought it was interesting to find out that when Brontà « first published the book ââ¬ËJane Eyreââ¬â¢, she was not permitted to publish under her female name. She had to create a male name for herself. I think itââ¬â¢s a shame that Brontà « was not given credit as the true author, but thankfully the system has changed now, although you may have noticed that the policy has not been completely abolished. Joanne Rowling, author of Harry Potter, had her name initialised to J.K Rowling, as not to deter male readers from reading it. All in all, I really enjoyed reading and analysing Charlotte Brontà «Ã¢â¬â¢s infamous novel, ââ¬ËJane Eyreââ¬â¢.

A Day of Many Events
The day I was born, April 28, 1982 was a day of love, business and learning. While the (insert surname) family is happily waiting for the love child of (name of your parents), series of events was also happening. It was a day filled with many activities and a day of expectations. In Federal Agencies, reports were made from the Education Week about the public hearings on bilingual education. This happened on the day I was born, April 28, 1982, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the El Fauno Room of the Condado Beach Hotel, San Juan, Puerto Rico (Education Week). Meanwhile, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration released reports involving the astronauts Robert L. Gibson and Rhea Seddon about the good news of expecting the birth of their first child. It was indeed a much anticipated moment for the couple to have a baby of their own (Lawrence). World Bank History also made one historical event on the day I was born. The IFC (International Finance Corp.) and IDA (International Development Association) Articles of Agreement were signed by Saint Lucia, a Caribbean island nation. The small country became IFCââ¬â¢s 122nd member and IDAââ¬â¢s 130th member. It was a huge leap towards developing funds for the world (World Bank). Clearly, on the day when my mother gave birth to me, there were many events that occurred in history. It was a day of hope for the education system when public hearings were conducted for the proposed Bilingual Education System. It was also a day of happiness and expectation for an astronaut couple. It was also an important day in the history of World Bank, when Saint Lucia joined IFC and IDA. Meanwhile, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, my parents were happily expecting a special giftââ¬âthey were excited to see one bouncing baby who will add happiness to our family. Indeed, April 28, 1982 was a day of hope, excitement, and fulfillment for my family and for the world.
